Computer chip shortage seen locally

A global computer chip shortage is delaying the opening of the new Flex Lanes on the Beltline in Madison until next summer the Wisconsin Dept of Transportation recently announced. Microchips are needed for the computers that will control the automated Flex Lane signs.

Why a shortage of computer chips? Demand increased significantly when people were home during the pandemic beginning in 2020. Then a major supplier in Japan experienced a fire, Texas had severe winter storms where Intel chips are made and Taiwan, which is one of the largest producers in the world of computer chips, is having a drought and making chips requires lots of water. Add in labor shortages and shipping bottlenecks and it has been the perfect storm for a chip shortage.
